Together We Can Help Animals in 2008

PCRM Support

Donate Today!

Alex klimovsky

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is dedicated to:
  • Promoting ethical research and education
  • Ending cruelty to animals in labs and classrooms
  • Advocating for life-saving nutrition policies and practices

join_now

Dear  klimovsky,

It’s through our supporters—physicians and concerned citizens like you—that PCRM had so many remarkable accomplishments in 2007 that saved animals from pain and death in labs and classrooms. We also helped countless people and animals by promoting a healthy diet that takes animals off plates and replaces them with nutritious and life-enhancing fruits and vegetables. Take a look at what we did together:

  • Four medical schools confirmed that they’ve shut down their live animal laboratories. PCRM is committed to continuing its campaign to shut down the labs in the 10 remaining medical schools that use this outdated teaching practice.

  • PCRM toxicologists helped spare 1,300 animals from torture and death in planned testing of the chemical Irganox 1035 at Ciba Specialty Chemical Corporation’s labs.

  • The first edition of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians was published to provide valuable information to the medical community on the role nutrition plays in preventing and treating diseases. This topic is not generally covered in medical schools, so PCRM sent 15,000 free copies to second-year students at 79 medical schools.

Please become a member of PCRM today!

We couldn’t have made this progress without compassionate and generous members who support our work. I hope that in 2008 you will join our battle…yes, it is a battle… to save the lives of innocent animals and protect human health.

Your tax-deductible membership contribution helps PCRM take on powerful animal-abusing industries and win. You give us the strength to deliver our message that compassion and scientific progress can coexist and are worth fighting for!

So, please, join PCRM today. The animals and people whose lives depend on PCRM are counting on you.

Best regards,

Neal Barnard, M.D.

Caesar Yaro

Caesar Yaro, who delivers Diabetes Health around the San Francisco Bay Area, has lived with diabetes for 18 years. He has endured retinopathy and neuropathy, and now undergoes dialysis three times a week (at a cost of $15,000 per month). He tells Scott King that he never received the diabetes education that might have prevented those problems. But an even greater problem is that he now needs dialysis four times a week to properly cleanse his blood of impurities, but Medicare only covers three. Both agree that it's ridiculous that Medicare will not take the more logical, less expensive approach of providing him with home dialysis.

Jim Turner

Actor-comedian Jim Turner was 17 years old when he was diagnosed with type 1 in 1970. He tells Scott King about the "death row meal" of ice cream, cake and pie he consumed the day before he began injecting insulin - a meal that shot his blood sugar level to 1,500. And so begins the story of his life since then, including "stumbling into acting," a stay at a filthy hospital in rural Italy where they tried "to starve the diabetes out of me," a brush with fame as a TV sitcom star, and work as a comedian for MTV and live stage productions. Turner, whose A1c is 5.9, also describes his daily diabetes regimen, agreeing with King that everybody experiences and manages the disease differently.

Insulin, Leptin, Diabetes, and Aging: Not So Strange Bedfellows

To successfully treat any disease, one must know what disease to treat. Treating only a symptom of the disease will leave the underlying disease unchecked and possibly worse. For example, we evolved the "runny" nose to help us clean out upper respiratory infections. So taking a decongestant to eradicate the symptom of a "runny" nose is actually counterproductive for the underlying disease.
