    Exultant Ark Photo Contest

    Dear PCRM supporter,

Following the success of my book Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good, I am excited to share with you the news that I am back to work on a new book—a pictorial volume showcasing the rich landscapes of pleasure in animals. This coffee-table book will contain large color images of animals engaging in rewarding activities, such as playing, parenting, and relaxing.

Pleasurable Kingdom was the first book to focus exclusively on pleasure in animals, and the new book will be the first pictorial book of its kind. Exultant Ark will celebrate the positive aspects of animals’ existence and further correct the stereotype—commonly bolstered by nature documentaries that favor life’s more dramatic and perilous moments—that wild nature is a constant, earnest struggle for survival.

I was energized by meeting so many animal lovers on my recent book tour and would like to invite the photographers among you to take part in this new effort by submitting your photographs for the Exultant Ark Photo Contest. The winning photograph will be a stunning, lush image of an animal(s) in a pleasurable situation that may range from the charismatic and familiar to the obscure and bizarre.

The top five images will each receive a copy of Exultant Ark and be featured on PCRM’s Web site where the winning image will be determined by online voting. The photograph with the most votes will be included in the book; however, placement and size of the image will be left to the discretion of The University of California Press. The winning photographer will also receive a pair of tickets to PCRM’s 25th Anniversary Gala.

Will you help spread the word about this unique opportunity by forwarding this message to your favorite animal photographers? I am looking forward to viewing the entries!

    Best regards,

    Season's Eatings (Allergy-Free) Season's Eatings (Allergy-Free)

The holiday season is here. Time to deck the halls, trim the tree, and most importantly, fire up the oven. For most Americans, the holidays mean chestnuts roasting on an open fire, homemade pumpkin pie, and turkey with all the trimmings. But what if you must cook for a family plagued with food allergies? What if you have one yourself? Does your holiday feast have to be a bland, flavorless affair? And if not, is it inevitable that you (or someone) must suffer the decidedly unfestive fate of being stuck at a dinner table full of foods that you can't enjoy?

    PCRM Needs Your Help

    Action Alert

ATTENTION: DO YOU OR ANY OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS, OR PATIENTS OWN STOCK IN GENERAL MOTORS?

As you may know, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is working on a campaign to require prominent companies to implement meaningful written policies designed to maximize donations to charities that promote human health, while avoiding unnecessary cruelty to animals. Many companies spend enormous sums to fund charities that engage in cruel and unscientific animal experiments. PCRM wants to end this wasteful spending.

We are in the process of filing several shareholder resolutions, which request the adoption and enforcement of the above policies. However, we are in need of additional persons owning GM stock to support that shareholder proposal. The stock must be worth at least $2,000 and have been held at least since December 2007. The stock can be held in your own name, or by your broker, but it cannot be owned through a mutual fund. The December filing deadline will soon be approaching, so we need to hear from you as soon as possible.

If you or someone you know fits into this category, and is interested in helping, please contact PCRM attorney Katherine Lin at klin@pcrm.org or 202-686-2210, ext. 350. Again, time is short, so if you would like to help, please act now.

Thank you so much for your help,

Egg Consumption Linked to Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

In a new study including about 57,000 men and women from two large, completed randomized trials, researchers found that daily consumption of eggs increased the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes. Daily egg intake was associated with a 77 and 58 percent increased risk for women and men, respectively.

Thinking of Kids? Here’s Some Tips for Handling Pregnancy & Diabetes Thinking of Kids? Here’s Some Tips for Handling Pregnancy & Diabetes

Becoming pregnant for the first time can be overwhelming for any woman, especially if that woman has diabetes. When my husband and I decided we were ready to have children, the first thing I did was make an appointment with my endocrinologist. Diagnosed when I was fourteen, I've had type 1 diabetes for twenty-four years. My doctor explained that I would need to be in tight control for three months before I could even think about babies, so I got right to work. Learning everything I could about diabetes and pregnancy, I was pleased to discover that with education, support, and practice, a woman with diabetes has every opportunity for a healthy pregnancy.

Nick Jonas and Bayer Diabetes Care have produced dog tags that feature a lyric from "A Little Bit Longer," the song Nick wrote about his diabetes. Two versions of the dog tags are available: one for people who would like to support the cause and another specifically for people with diabetes. The dog tag for people with diabetes has the lyric on the front, but also has the word "diabetes" on the back to document their personal fight against the disease.
