A Peek into the Benefits of the AADE and Two Candidates for the Board of Directors

The polls are open for voting for new members of the AADE board, AADE officers, and the nominating committee. Diabetes Health wishes Board of Directors candidates and former DH Guest Editors, Kim Higgins and Deborah Greenwood, best of luck.

The American Association for Diabetes Educators (AADE) is a professional organization made up of (mostly) diabetes educators whose focus is on helping people with diabetes improve their health. Started in 1973, the organization is enjoying its 36th year in 2009. Read more...

Peptide Used to Combat Alzheimer’s Found to Be Powerful Insulin Regulator

Humanin (HN) is a mitochondrial peptide* that in some research has shown the ability to protect against the death of neurons, the devastating consequence of diseases like Alzheimer's. According to the leader of a research team at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in the Bronx, however, it also significantly improves the insulin sensitivity of diabetic rats and sharply drops their glucose levels.

In short, says Dr. Nir Barzilai, the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair of Aging Research and Director of the Institute for Aging Research at the college, HN is the most powerful insulin metabolism regulator his team has ever seen. Read more...

Plastic Fantastic: Protective Device Fends Off Immune System Attacks on Transplanted Precursor Cells

Significant relief for people with type 1 diabetes could soon come in the form of a device made from a thermoplastic resin commonly used as a coating for cookware, gaskets, and hoses.

The device uses polytetrafluoroethylene to encase and protect transplanted pancreatic precursor cells from attacks by T-cells, the "soldiers" of the body's immune system. By protecting the transplanted cells from T-cell assaults, the device could do away with the need for type 1 transplant patients to take long-term immunosuppressant drugs.  Read more...

Study Says That Over One-Third of Type 1 Women Have Sexual Problems

A ten-year study that tracked 652 women with type 1 diabetes found that 35 percent of them reported some sort of sexual problem, including loss of desire (57 percent of those reporting problems), problems experiencing orgasm (51 percent), pain during intercourse (21 percent), reduced arousal (38 percent), or decreased vaginal lubrication (47 percent).

Although the study, conducted by Leuven University in Belgium and published recently in the medical journal Diabetes Care, found that a significant percentage of diabetic women experience sexual problems, it did not conclude that diabetes itself was the cause. Read more...

Diabetes and Smoking

The connection between smoking and cancer is well documented.  Less well known, however, is the fact that smoking exacerbates complications for people with diabetes. Smokers with diabetes are eleven times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke than people who don't have diabetes and don't smoke.

Still, 13 percent of Californians who have diabetes also smoke. "Smoking has devastating effects on a person with diabetes," says Tami MacAller, Senior Health Promotion Specialist of the California Diabetes Program.  "Most of these smokers see a primary care doctor who may not have all the tools and answers regarding smoking and diabetes.  Our goal is to connect with healthcare providers, to let them know about the tools and resources available for smoking cessation." What Are the Effects of Smoking?

What Are the Effects of Smoking?

Smoking has severe effects on your diabetes and your health. Quitting smoking will give you more energy, better control of your diabetes, and less chance of a heart attack or stroke. Read more...

Wanna Quit Smoking?

1. Don't smoke any number or any kind of cigarette. Smoking even a few cigarettes a day can hurt your health. And if you try to smoke fewer cigarettes but do not stop completely, soon you'll be smoking the same amount again.

Smoking "low-tar, low-nicotine" cigarettes usually does little good either. Nicotine is so  addictive that if you switch to lower nicotine brands, you'll probably just puff harder, longer, and more often on each cigarette. The only safe choice is to quit completely. Read more...

Is It Harder to Kick the Habit if You Have Diabetes?

Smoking increases the harmful effects of diabetes by increasing insulin resistance and worsening diabetes control. It raises the likelihood of microvascular and macrovascular complications associated with diabetes. The risk of death from heart disease and stroke is increased, as are the possibilities of neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy.

At the same time, smokers with diabetes have unique issues in terms of motivating and maintaining cessation. Some studies of smokers with diabetes have found that they tend to be less actively involved in their diabetes care than nonsmokers; for example, they may be less likely to check their blood glucose levels frequently or exercise regularly. They tend to feel less support from family and friends, and they report "often feeling sad or depressed" more often than their nonsmoking counterparts.  Post-cessation weight gain may also be an impediment to quitting.  Read more...
